Duck Duck Truth

Relationships and connection are funny things. We overthink how we do or can connect with people. However, it could be something as simple as sharing a single Busch Light, cooking dinner together and listening to 2Pac, literally breaking and sharing good bread, or giving someone your duck to cook for dinner. Whatever it is, these “little” connection points add up. They give us the opportunity to share our lives, ourselves, and recognition of that person or people in our lives.

There is so much going on in the world right now, and I guess there always is. And, while it might feel like you can do nothing, you can do one thing to make this a better place – cherish and cultivate your nearest and dearest relationships. There are a lot of different kinds of relationships, but the nearest and dearest are special. They do not come around often or frequently, which is why they must be treasured. These special relationships, with TLC, will make this world a better place. We all need someone, and someone needs you.

Do something a little different and make and eat some good duck. Enjoy your people. And, be true.

Crispy skin on the duck — done just right.

Pro Tips:

  • Don’t let making duck intimidate you. You can make it just as good as in a restaurant right at home.
  • The brine for the duck is where it’s at.
  • Crisping the fat in the duck will make or break your meal.
  • $15 wine recommendation:
  • The correct pan frying of the duck is key, particularly the fat. The couple of minutes in the oven is the icing.
  • If you have not yet bought a Lodge cast iron pan yet, treat yourself for the rest of your life. That is how long you will love it and it will last if you initially season it right.
  • If you believe in “it takes a Village,” start by being The Village where you can be.
  • Don’t underestimate the “feel good” power of the espresso.
  • Sometimes, your personality can go way further than you think than that sweatshirt you are wearing.
  • Invest your carbs in the Sourdough and Tomato Parmesan Sourdough breads from Spread Market & Larder. If you are picking it up in the afternoon, put your bread on hold before, because it sells out fast. There is no phone number to call, so send them a DM through Instagram. They are actually really responsive!
  • Sit on the porch of Spread Market in the sun and drink a dry cider after you pick up your bread.
  • There are different kinds of love, but love is still love. Whichever kind of love that is, think about how you can show someone you love them today.
  • Just say “no” to Vegas Bombs, even if someone else at the bar is buying them for you.
  • New babies are always a good reminder of how we all can create a fresh start and how precious life is. There are few blessings that can equate to a healthy new addition to family and friends.
  • Busch Light is an underrated light beer. Every Midwesterner just wishes I did not write this right now, in case it catches on in The City and gets more expensive.
  • Do we sometimes hide behind appreciation and gratitude to justify our current state? I’m not sure. Open to suggestions…
  • For those of you that are having a tough time now, the good news is, everything changes, which means it can get better too…because everything changes…always.
